Second Draft

A Communication Designer as A Messenger

People usually get information about new goods and ideas through visual communication like advertisements. Most people also communicate through various media such as books, magazines, internet and TV in their daily lives. Everything is connected to visual communication and Design is no different. For example it is the Industrial designer who designs the products people daily use but it is the Communication designer who packs and advertises them.

However it is common to see the Communication designers advertising the product in a totally different way from which the Industrial designer initially designed. The reason it happens is because of their different point of view toward products. As a simple example the Designer will mostly concentrate on the efficient usage of the product while the Advertiser will concentrate on the looks.

A well designed product advertises itself but there exists great products with poor appearance which sometime are completely not noticeable. That is how important the role of a Communication designer is and why I changed my major to Communication design from Industrial design when I applied for Graduate school. I have majored Industrial design in undergraduate where I was able to learn of the 2-Demension, 3-Demension and open space design. The knowledge helps me understand and consider the designer side and I am hoping to be able to be a Communication designer who can express and advertise exactly what the Industrial designers initially thought and designed becoming a Messenger and the bridge that connects Designers to Customers.

As studying Communication Design, I am trying to concentrate on Typography which is the basic and major part of Communication design. Typography provides the exact information through words and letters which people see everyday. That is why it is very important for it to be readable and creative as well. I am hoping to learn more and more everyday so I can be a Communication designer working as a messenger.

First Revision

A Communication Designer as A Messenger (Good title)

Most people communicate with (through) various media such as books, magazines, internet, and TV. Also, they (They also) usually understand (get information about) new goods and idea through visual communication like advertisements. (Change the positions of these two sentences. Then you will emphasize the importance of visual communication.) Industrial Design and Communication Design are related like (to each other in that) that if an Industrial Designer makes some products, a Communication Designer will make some advertisements and packages for them. I studied about Industrial Design include products, interior, and environment and now, I am studying about Communication Design with knowledge of different part in design. (Think this part differently. It sounds too plain.)

When I was studying Industrial Design, I enjoyed making models by hand and using 3D computer programs. Making models is very different from communication design because it taught me how I can understand and design with 3dimension. However, Communication Design works with 2dimension. The biggest difference of 2D and 3D is to understand and make space. (Think about a new way of constructing this paragraph. Try to use this sentence as the topic sentence emphasizing why this difference contributes to your current art work.) During my first semester, I took visual communication І which is one of important basic class in Communication Design. (unnecessary part.) I had to design a modular system product and then make a logo, three posters, and stationery. Especially, the posters should be had some image to explain my product and I knew 3D is perfect way to show what this is. (a bit boring) However, my most classmates did not know the way to express with 3D. Thus, they were curios about my works and they found some way to explain their products with 3D.

While I started to study Industrial Design, (unnecessary) I believed that good designed products are best advertisements. However, I realized that good designed products without visual advertisements will be known slowly because it is not enough to understand the whole concept and have strong impression. After that time, I always concern about visual expression. Thus, I could compose my work with some letter which I thought important but normal people who are not designers could not understand perfectly. However, the communication designers are like messengers to help understanding because the messengers will tell important information or idea exactly. This makes me studying Communication Design and now I am finding the best way to communication with people.

To study Communication Design, typography is most challenging part for me because typography is basic and important and a big part of communication. Most people will read and see words and letters everyday and everywhere and so the letters and words are so familiar with people and give exactly information. I realized the composition of typography is very important readably and creatively. For example, good composition of books can be read easily and interested. I hope to understand typography fully and I want to play with letters and words to give people fun and fresh information. Understanding typography will be made me to be a communication designer as a messenger. (Yanyi, this is a well written. Focus on you and your work, deleting some plain explanations.) (Think about unity. The connection 2D-3D-Typography…)
