A Communication Designer as A Messenger


Most people communicate with various media such as books, magazines, internet, and TV. Also, they usually understand new goods and idea through visual communication like advertisements. Industrial Design and Communication Design are related like that if an Industrial Designer makes some products, a Communication Designer will make some advertisements and packages for them. I studied about Industrial Design include products, interior, and environment and now, I am studying about Communication Design with knowledge of different part in design.

When I was studying Industrial Design, I enjoyed making models by hand and using 3D computer programs. Making models is very different from communication design because it taught me how I can understand and design with 3dimension. However, Communication Design works with 2dimension. The biggest difference of 2D and 3D is to understand and make space. During my first semester, I took visual communication І which is one of important basic class in Communication Design. I had to design a modular system product and then make a logo, three posters, and stationery. Especially, the posters should be had some image to explain my product and I knew 3D is perfect way to show what this is. However, my most classmates did not know the way to express with 3D. Thus, they were curios about my works and they found some way to explain their products with 3D.

While I started to study Industrial Design, I believed that good designed products are best advertisements. However, I realized that good designed products without visual advertisements will be known slowly because it is not enough to understand the whole concept and have strong impression. After that time, I always concern about visual expression. Thus, I could compose my work with some letter which I thought important but normal people who are not designers could not understand perfectly. However, the communication designers are like messengers to help understanding because the messengers will tell important information or idea exactly. This makes me studying Communication Design and now I am finding the best way to communication with people.

To study Communication Design, typography is most challenging part for me because typography is basic and important and a big part of communication. Most people will read and see words and letters everyday and everywhere and so the letters and words are so familiar with people and give exactly information. I realized the composition of typography is very important readably and creatively. For example, good composition of books can be read easily and interested. I hope to understand typography fully and I want to play with letters and words to give people fun and fresh information. Understanding typography will be made me to be a communication designer as a messenger.
